Fractional Chief Medical Officer
Job Title: Fractional Chief Medical Officer (Digital Transformation)
Location: Remote / Hybrid
Contract Type: Part-time / Contract (1–2 days per week, negotiable)
Reports To: CEO / Chief Transformation Officer / Board of Directors
About the Role
We are seeking a visionary and pragmatic Fractional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to lead the clinical strategy and governance of our digital transformation efforts. This role blends medical leadership with technology enablement, helping us embed clinical integrity and user-centred design into the development and implementation of digital health initiatives. You will work cross-functionally with executive, clinical, data, and product teams to ensure that innovation is clinically sound, ethically responsible, and operationally impactful.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the senior clinical voice for all digital transformation projects.
- Align digital health initiatives with evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and emerging models of care.
- Contribute to the organisation’s long-term strategic plan from a clinical and digital innovation perspective.
- Digital Transformation Oversight
- Guide the clinical design and implementation of digital tools (e.g., AI decision support, virtual care platforms, EHR improvements, remote monitoring).
- Evaluate digital health technologies for safety, efficacy, and equity.
- Champion interoperability, user-centred design, and co-production with patients and clinicians.
- Clinical Governance & Risk
- Establish frameworks for clinical risk assessment, digital safety, and ethical use of data and AI.
- Work with quality and safety teams to ensure digital solutions meet clinical governance requirements.
- Support regulatory compliance (e.g. MHRA, PMDC).
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a liaison between clinical staff, executives, product teams, and external partners.
- Represent the organisation at industry panels, advisory boards, and clinical communities.
- Lead or co-lead workshops to foster clinical engagement with digital transformation.
- Team & Capability Building
- Mentor clinical informaticians, medical advisors, and digital fellows.
- Help shape the digital clinical culture through education and role-modelling.
- Promote multidisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, engineers, and designers.
Deliverables (within first 6–12 months)
- Digital Clinical Strategy Document
A high-level roadmap aligning clinical priorities with digital transformation goals.
- Clinical Governance Framework for Digital Health
A clear, scalable model outlining clinical risk management, digital safety standards, and compliance guidelines.
- Clinical Input into Product/Platform Roadmap
Clinically validated input into feature design, user flows, and prioritisation of new digital tools.
- Evaluation of Key Digital Tools
Evidence-based assessments of 2–3 core digital initiatives (e.g., AI tools, telehealth systems), with recommendations.
- Stakeholder Mapping and Engagement Plan
Identification of key clinical stakeholders and an actionable plan to ensure sustained buy-in.
- Monthly Strategic Advisory Reports
Brief updates for the board or executive team, summarising clinical input, risks, and opportunities related to digital projects.
- Workshop or Training Series
One or more clinical engagement sessions focused on digital capability building.
Qualifications
- PMDC-registered physician with a strong understanding of different healthcare systems.
- Proven leadership experience in clinical, digital health, or transformation roles.
- Familiarity with health IT, digital safety, AI governance, and clinical informatics.
- Strong interpersonal, strategic, and systems thinking skills.
- Experience with agile or product development processes is a plus.
Preferred Backgrounds
- Federal or Provincial leadership roles
- Healthtech, startup or scale-up experience
- Academic or research expertise in digital health, informatics, or AI ethics
